Death Note (Episodes 1-6) – First Impressions

“Wow! The apples in the human world are damn good! They are, how do you say, “Juicy”?” Well, I FINALLY started “Death Note”, and I’m glad I have people to talk to about Death Note! =D Almost all the other anime and television shows that I watch are not watched by my friends… =( Well, anyway, I, so far, have just watched the first six episodes and it seems to be moving quite well, and it seems to have already grabbed me, and I hope to have the series finished in two weeks, so long as I don’t have any long interruptions during my holidays and/or I don’t over procrastinate.

Haha, boredom. One of the most deadly emotions/feelings/reactions that one could ever experience. (And I use “deadly” quite literally here…) “Rebirth”, the first episode, was a good introduction to the series. Light Yagami, the main character, is just one of those “super intelligent” students is bored, like a normal student I guess… Ryuk, who is a Death God, is also terribly bored… So what does he do? He decides to drop his “Death Note” into the human world, which Light eventually picks up… Now, the Death Note is a notebook, where, as the name kinda suggests, when you write a person’s name down, the person is to die. There are rules to the Death Note in terms of how to use it, and how it works, so you don’t kill everyone who has the same name: “This note will not take effect unless the writer has the subject’s face in their mind when writing his/her name.” The person is to die of a heart attack in 40 seconds after the name has been written down if a cause of death is not specified. At first, Light sees it to be a form of practical joke, but once he tests the Death Note out, he discovers that it is real deal. Just like any bored student, he uses the Death Note “for the greater good”. Although once he kills a large number of people, the International Police Organisation and the legendary “L” go after him, in a thrilling, psychological “cat and mouse” style chase.

Now, of course, once again, I am terrible at writing reviews, and I’d strongly suggest you read other reviews on “My Anime List“. I guess I would say that this has already hooked me, and I hope that the series continues on it’s rather fast moving plot line for the next 31 episodes. All the characters have very interesting personalities and actions, particularly L. Unlike the Higurashi series, the soundtrack and music used in Death Note is not as fitting, so I’ve found, although the animation is very much better than Higurashi… You can keep track of where I am in Death Note by visiting my My Anime List profile, and see the other anime that I have seen/plan to see. Yeah, some of them are weird…

Fringe (Episode 1 – “Pilot”) – First impressions

“The only thing better than a cow, is a human. Unless you want milk. Then you need a cow.” So yesterday was the airing of the new television series “Fringe”. With me being a fairly big fan of “Lost” and waiting for the next season of it to air, “Fringe” seemed to be an interesting show to watch as it was created by J.J. Abrams just like “Lost” was. So this is probably a show I’d be interested in following to see where the plot goes and if it will be as complicated as Lost is.

The first episode “Pilot” started off with the fictional airline and flight of Glatterflug Flight 627. (Haha! They stole Lufthansa’s logo and changed it slightly!) The aircraft was above the Atlantic Ocean en-route from Hamburg to Boston flying through an electrical storm. A very nervous looking passenger seems to be struggling to keep himself together. He opens one of his suitcases and takes out what appears to be some sort of insulin shot, and injects it into himself. He later unbuckles his seatbelt and starts heading down the aisleway. A flight attendant goes after him and once she turns his face around, his face appears to be decaying rapidly and his skin seems transparent. The rest of the passengers on board begin to panic and everyone on board suffers the same conditions. The pilots turn the auto-pilot on to see what all the noise in the cabin is all about, and they too, suffer the same conditions. The aircraft lands at Logan International Airport, Boston thanks to the PEARL Aerocontrol System (which is fictional) at Boston, which can land a plane automatically. All the passengers on board are dead and their bodies become skinless, with only their skeletons visible. This is the start of what seems to be a to be large scale terrorism plot, as the FBI, CDC and CIA investigate the events on board Flight 627 and the purpose of the company “Massive Dynamic”.

The cast seems to have an unusual amount of Australian’s in it. “Anna Torv” is portrayed by Olivia Dunham and is primarily known for her role in “McLeod’s Daughters”. John Noble, another Australian actor, (although born in London) portrays the “insane” “Dr. Walter Bishop” who currently is my favourite character, (I seem to like the crazy scientists who sometimes make no sense whatsoever) and is best known as “Denethor” in “The Lord of the Rings”. Lance Reddick, who plays “Special Agent Phillip Broyles” also plays the mysterious and little known character of “Matthew Abaddon” on Lost and I would like to know more about his character on Lost… Other cast members include Joshua Jackson, (Plays Peter Bishop, Walter’s son, and is known for his role in “Dawson’s Creek”) Kirk Acevedo (Plays Charlie Francis), Blair Brown (Plays Nina Sharp) and Jasika Nicole (Playing Astrid Farnsworth). It seems to be a rather interesting show, with an interesting cast. The soundtrack is also produced and composed by Michael Giacchino, who also produced the soundtracks for “Lost”. I will most likely be following the series relatively closely.
