China 2010 – Going Broke – 18.05.10

Today’s weather was pretty bad… Annoyingly humid, and… foggy? It’s like when it’s supposed to rain, but the rain evaporates before the it reaches the going? It was only 23 degrees celcius I think, but wow…

And, I bought my DSLR today. Phew… I’m pretty much broke now… I haven’t had a real chance to play around with it yet, but once we go World Expo-ing…

In the morning we payed a trip to one of my favourite places in all Shanghai. Xujiahui. The place is one of the busiest shopping districts in Shanghai, as well as being a major transport hub, and road intersection. If you’re unfamiliar with the place, getting lost is incredibly easy.

They have a Best Buy here, which kinda suprised me. Americanization. (Yeah, I used a ‘z’) it was small… Though I don’t know what a normal Best Buy looks like…

A Batman TV. Oh yeah.

Xujiahui is… Amazing… I’ve never seen so many gadgets and tech all in one place! (This photo doesn’t really show it’s extensive-ness) I haven’t been able to take a good look at everything here yet, since my main priority has been getting my DSLR. I should be paying another trip to here soon, cos there is so much stuff I wanna see!!!

Xujiahui, as I said, is a major transport hub, yet it’s only served by two metro lines. (1 and 9) Though thousands of people still pass through the gates here, and this place gets packed during peak hour. It’s insane… What you see above, is the underpass, connecting the two metro lines.

When we first arrived in Shanghai, as we were passing through customs, my dad ran into his cousin. Turns out, they arrived in Shanghai same time we did. Both our flights were delayed by One Hour too. So, we visited them while they were here.

They were staying at some of my relative’s places while they were here, and since they live in New York, I could more easily communicate with them.
Their apartment was really nice… Almost meets the needs for my/our dream apartment… Large, spacious, pretty… ‘cept for location and all that shiz… Though, there’s a nice kind of… Garden/Courtyard below.

Weather got better near the end of the afternoon. You can see how they’ve built the apartments. Mostly identical, and mass produced to meet the growth needs of Shanghai.

Okay, so a bit about my new Camera.
Being my first DSLR, I had to make sure that I was getting what I could use. So, my Dad and my Uncle both used to play around with cameras when they were much younger, so they know a bit about the basics, and they could help me make a decision.

What I love about Asian sales people, is that they are willing to go far/into detail, to sell a product. Since my Dad and Uncle both aren’t fully aware of what professional photographers use, nor do fully understand how digital automatated cameras work, the sales people were able to explain it to them, while I sat, half dumbfounded (something about them speaking Chinese) and I just got myself a little used to using the lens and holding the camera itself.

So, what we ended up getting: A Canon EOS 550D (18MP, 1080p Vid Rec, SD(HC/XC) Compatible, 6400 ISO, 3″ screen), paired with a Canon 18-55mm IS, as well as a Sigma 70-300mm DG MACRO lens. All made by the trusty Japanese! =D
Coming with it, an 8gb SDHC Card (Class 6), as well as a polarised and UV lens cover.
All up – 7900Yuan. (Vaguely $1350AUD)

Yeah… Broke…

Wow. That apartment skyline looks really…amazing…and somewhat impressively monotic? But still, seems like an extremely good way of running things. TAKE NOTE, NSW PARLIAMENT.

And I’m extremely jealous that you’re going to Xujiahui. I’ve never heard of it. It looks AWESOME. 😀 Ship 7000 batman tvs back here and they’ll sell like hotcakes, we split the profits 50-50. Deal? *Shakes*

Have an awesome time with your new camera!
